Responsibility

Every tonne counts

Hercinia makes four commitments on how it will use resources. Once a site operates, it plans to report on each of them every year.

Commitments

Four commitments for every site

Grey drill core in wooden trays; a gloved hand lifts one piece, from above.
Pale residue powder and a scoop beside a block cast from it, from above.
Gloved hands sorting used battery modules into grey crates, from above.
A restored slope from above in its first year, a gravel track through new grass.
The same slope after ten years: meadow, shrubs and young trees beside the track.
The same slope after thirty years: young forest beside the track.

01

Take only what is needed

Recover as much metal as the process allows, so that less rock is moved for each tonne sold.

02

Use what is taken

Plan a use for every residue before it is produced: building materials first, backfill next, safe storage last.

03

Bring materials back

Run recycled lithium and other secondary material through the same plants as mined material.

The same slope after ten years: meadow, shrubs and young trees beside the track.

04

Leave the land usable

Backfill, restore and hand back land for an agreed use.

Host regions

Plan with the people who live there

Neighbours will have a say before decisions are made and will choose their own monitors.

  1. Share studies before filing plans.
  2. Publish go/no-go criteria in advance.
  3. Let the people affected choose independent monitors, paid from an escrow account.
  4. Share benefits by a fixed formula and report on them every year.
  5. Hire and train locally first.
